Abstract

There is interest in utilizing emerging classes of highly sensitive, miniature, and energy-efficient sensors to perform a variety of surveillance and reconnaissance applications in support of the Department of the Navy’s Strategic Blueprint for the Arctic. Acoustic technology has been studied for long-range, under-ice, real-time monitoring in the Arctic  but may have limits in platform detection. Electric-field and magnetic-field sensing technology have not been well studied for that Arctic environment or yet used in Arctic monitoring. In response to Navy STTR solicitation N24B-T029,  “Arctic Fox Sentinel”, QUASAR Federal Systems, Inc (QFS), supported by research partner Syracuse University and consultant Dr. Kerry Key, proposes to develop a sensor prototype mainly based on unique electric- and magnetic- field sensing for the Arctic environment. The sensor will address the requirements recommended by the solicitation with specifications to be finalized during the program. The sensor package can be deployed by air or land expeditionary forces, and can be placed on the ground and on ice, as well as being deployed in seawater. The base portion of the project will establish the feasibility of the system development while the option component will create an outline design for a prototype to be built in Phase II.
